Economic Development/Tourism Coordinator Supervisor:  Director of Economic Development


Primary Objective:

Performs professional and administrative tasks related to coordinating and promoting business growth and development, and tourism services of the County.


Essential Functions/Tasks:

  • Coordinates activities to attract and retain industry, business, and tourism to the County;

  • Work is primarily performed in the County Administration Center. Some travel is involved by automobile to various locations generally within the State; however, out of state travel may be required to meet with business or industrial clients;

  • Compiles and maintains current data on the industrial and commercial locations, tourism industry and characteristics of the County, including available sites and buildings, transportation, labor market, utilities and social-economic conditions, and tourism-related activities in the area;

  • Assists in the preparation of grants, RFPs, incentive programs, and financial analyses;

  • Assists in the preparation of proposals for prospects including site selectors, corporate real estate and economic development partners

  • Implements promotion plan designed to attract industry, commercial development and tourist;

  • Assist in the marketing of the travel industry and facilities to tourists and tour companies;

  • Processes requests for information and literature from individuals, ad responses, other tourism centers, and brochure distributors;

  • Assist in the implementation of the Master Plan for the Technology and Industrial Park;

  • Interacts with tourism and economic development organizations, civic groups, local, regional, and state  agencies associated with economic development and tourism;

  • Coordinates the activities with the City and other agencies involved in tourism and economic development;

  • Assists with the development of programs that will strengthen the skills of local workforce;

  • Compiles community data base to provide marketing and demographic data on business and site inquiries;

  • Coordinate activities associated with providing full service to meetings, conventions and events, developing proposals for conventions and meetings and maintaining communication with meeting and event planners once the event is booked;

  • Assist in maintaining working relationship with hotel sales and convention services staff;

  • Performs administrative tasks related to office operations;

  • Coordinates with Shenandoah Valley Partnership, Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Shenandoah Valley Travel Association, Virginia Tourism Board, and other related groups and agencies to further economic development and tourism activities in the County;

  • Maintains the County’s economic development and tourism websites in conjunction with the County IT department, and;

  • Does other related tasks as required.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in marketing, economics, or business administration and experience in economic development or tourism activities;

  • Thorough demonstrable knowledge of public relations and effective communication; general knowledge of principles and practices of economic development, tourism, and related areas;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, business community and citizens;

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate information clearly, both orally and in writing, is essential;

  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information and develop detailed reports;

  • Ability to work independently;

  • Functional skills with personal computer to include MS Office and internet;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues, employees, and representatives of other-public agencies;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County and State officials, travel service providers, tourists and tour companies, associates and the general public;

  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.

  • Regular attendance at work

  • Knowledge of the Spanish language is preferred, but not required


Physical Requirements:

This is sedentary and agile work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Regular required tasks include sitting; talking or hearing, in person, in meetings and by telephone; using hands to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; and reaching with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to drive a vehicle, walk, and stand; in addition, use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret complex data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or skills. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
